Cochlear Implant
Cochlear Implants are small, electronic devices, which provide awareness of sound so that patients may enjoy the benefits of hearing.
-
Cochlear Implant Enables Hearing
Even when hearing loss is severe and early in onset, the hearing nerve survives and retains responsiveness to electrical currents.
-
Variations in the power
Variations in the power and tempo of the electrical signals convey various sounds by triggering different patterns of impulses in the hearing nerve. Hearing stations in the brain receive and coordinate these impulse trains.
-
Benefits of Cochlear Implantation
A child born deaf can develop verbal language, parents with diminishing hearing who wish to monitor the safety and speech of their hearing child, or those with advanced hearing loss who wish to hear the voices of younger generations, the benefits for restoring hearing are numerous.
-
Common Ear Procedures
Most ear infections get better on their own or with antibiotics. Chronic ear infections may require lifestyle changes, decongestant medications, or treatment of allergy disorders. Only severe cases may require surgery, either through the ear canal or through an incision behind the ear.
-
Myringotomy Tubes (Ear Tubes)
Small tubes are surgically placed in the eardrum to help fluid to drain from the middle ear, create a pathway for air to move freely, and prevent fluid buildup behind the eardrum.
-
Tympanoplasty
An eardrum can burst or tear due to severe ear infection, being poked with a foreign object, sudden change in air pressure, head trauma, or a loud noise. The damaged eardrum may be rebuilt using graft of skin or tissue from another part of the ear.
-
Mastoidectomy
A cholesteatoma is a benign mass that if left untreated may damage hearing and the mastoid bone that helps regulate air pressure inside the ear. The surgeon can remove the damaged portions of the mastoid bone as well as the cholesteatoma.
