- The aim of cancer treatment is to relieve symptoms, cure the patient, and prolong or save life. When cancer is detected early, treatment is very effective and patients are usually cured.
- In advanced stage cancer, complete cure may not be possible, and its treatment aims to control the disease and improve quality of life of the patient.
- Surgery and radiotherapy can eradicate the disease from the primary site (site of origin) of cancer. Chemotherapy, hormonal therapy and immunotherapy are useful for disease which may have spread outside the site of origin of cancer.
-
Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy drugs are used to destroy rapidly growing cancer cells. Sometimes it may slow the growth of cancer cells, and prevent them spreading to other parts of the body. It may also be used along with radiation to potentiate effect of radiation. It may also be used after surgery or radiation to destroy remnant cancer cells. It may also be used before surgery to shrink tumour to make complete clearance of tumour by surgery possible.
-
Targeted therapy
It is use of monoclonal antibodies (or mAb) or tablets to specifically target cells with specific receptors on tumour. It has fewer side effects as compared to conventional chemotherapy.
-
Hormonal Therapy
Hormonal therapy helps in certain tumours which are hormone sensitive like breast and prostate cancer.
-
Immunotherapy
Immunotherapy is a form of treatment which stimulates the body’s immune system to destroy cancer cells.
